THE RIVER MINCIO AND THE MORAINIC HILLS
The river Mincio starts in Pinzolo (MN) under the name Sarca confluence of more sources which are produced by some massives such as Brenta, Adamello and Persanella. Going through Val Rendeva for about 78 km, Sarca flows into lake Garda near Riva di Trento. The river exits the lake under the name Mincio which, going through the morainic landscape and through Ponti sul Mincio, heads to Mantua where it forms three lakes that surround the city. Mincio ends its 75 km journey in Po. The stretch of the river in Ponti sul Mincio is integrated in an intricated water system and aimed to divide the outflow of the river in a network of channels which are destined to different roles: irrigation, energetic and hydraulic protection. The length of river Mincio including 41km of lake Garda is 194 km which classificates it as 11th between the longest rivers of Italy.
River Mincio flows channeled inside narrow artificial riverbanks until it gets to Salionze, where Papa San Leone I stopped Attila and his legions. The landscape, before and after the obstruction, is marked by the variety of soft and green elevations with basins which became swampy and peaty deposits. It is also marked by unique flora and fauna.
These hill formations are what remains of the frontal moraines that have been pushed by the benacense glacier to the below mantuan plain during the periods of its maximum expansion (2 million years ago). In Ponti the major morainic arch is named “Monte della Guardia” and it overhangs two small peat bogs which are still well preserved and full of a rich hygrophilous vegetation.
The vegetation of the hill offers a relevant naturalistic interest. Woods grow in the northern slopes, these woods are mainly formed by downy and hornbeam. In the undergrowth we can find hawthorn, euonymus, coronilla (??), holly and in spring blossom periwinkle, anemones, hepatic and the rare red lily. In the southern slopes the wood becomes less frequent and gives space to special and natural environments, dry fields covered in wonderful vernal flowering. In this particular environment there are loads of botanic species, we mention orchids and the mountain pasqueflower because of their extreme rarity and particular scientific interest.
